There’s something powerful about the moment a person finds their voice. It’s a moment that signifies courage, empowerment, and a deep trust in something bigger than themselves. One remarkable biblical example of this is Queen Esther. She was a woman who, like many of us, had moments of doubt, fear, and uncertainty. Through her journey, we can learn about the importance of trusting God and finding the courage to stand up for what’s right, no matter how difficult or dangerous it may seem.

In Joshua 1:9, we are reminded, “Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” This verse became the foundation for Esther’s courage. She had no idea how God would work through her, but she trusted that He would guide her when the time came to speak.

A Call for Courage: Esther’s Story

Esther’s story begins with her rise from an orphaned Jewish girl to the queen of Persia, all while keeping her faith and heritage hidden. She lived in a time when the Jewish people were in exile, and her position as queen gave her influence, but also placed her in a difficult situation. When the king’s advisor, Haman, planned to annihilate the Jewish people, Esther faced a tough choice: should she remain silent and protect herself, or should she risk everything to speak out and save her people?

Her cousin Mordecai challenged her with these words: “Who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14). This moment was her divine appointment, and Esther had to choose whether to trust God and act, or to let fear silence her.

Just like Esther, many of us are placed in situations where we must choose between speaking up or staying silent. Whether it’s standing up for someone, speaking out against injustice, or sharing our faith, it can be terrifying to take that step. But, as the Bible reminds us in 2 Timothy 1:7, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” Esther did not let fear control her. Instead, she found courage through her faith, and it allowed her to act boldly for the greater good.

The Moment of Decision: Speaking Up for What’s Right

Esther’s pivotal moment came when she chose to approach the king. According to Persian law, anyone who approached the king without being summoned risked death, even if they were the queen. But Esther trusted that God would be with her and give her the courage she needed. She fasted and prayed for three days, asking her people to do the same.

In Esther 4:16, she says, “Go, gather all the Jews who are present in Shushan, and fast for me; neither eat nor drink for three days, night or day. My maids and I will fast likewise. And so I will go to the king, which is against the law; and if I perish, I perish!”

These words were not spoken lightly. Esther had weighed the risk, but in the end, she chose to trust God’s plan for her life. She was willing to risk everything for the sake of her people. Through her decision to act, Esther exemplified courage not only in facing her fears but in knowing that God was with her.

Her bravery teaches us that sometimes courage means taking a risk. God often asks us to step out in faith, even when the outcome is uncertain. When we trust God and His timing, He equips us with the strength to do things we never thought possible.

Trusting God in Moments of Fear

Esther’s story reminds us that courage doesn’t mean the absence of fear—it means trusting God through the fear. Throughout Scripture, we see individuals who were called to take bold actions despite their own feelings of inadequacy or fear.

For instance, Moses was called to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, yet he was afraid and doubted his abilities. In Exodus 4:10, he says to God, “O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither before nor since You have spoken to Your servant; but I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.” Yet God reassured him that He would be with him and equip him for the task. Just as Moses had to trust God’s plan, so did Esther.

In Isaiah 41:10, God promises, “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” Esther’s faith was rooted in the knowledge that God would give her the strength to fulfill His purpose for her life, regardless of the fear she felt.

We too can take comfort in this promise. When faced with fear, we must remember that God is always with us. His presence gives us the courage to speak up, act, and stand for what is right.

The Power of Bold Action: Esther’s Victory

Esther’s courage paid off. When she finally spoke to the king, she didn’t simply ask for the safety of her people; she asked him to see the injustice that had been done and to reverse the decree of death. Through her boldness, the king was moved, and the Jewish people were saved.

In Esther 7:3-4, Esther says, “If I have found favor in your sight, O king, and if it pleases the king, let my life be given me at my petition, and my people at my request. For we have been sold, my people and I, to be destroyed, to be killed, and to be annihilated.” In this moment, Esther’s voice was the key to saving her people, and it was her willingness to speak up that made all the difference.

Just as Esther found the courage to act in her moment of need, we too are called to act boldly when the situation demands it. Courage is often revealed in action, and by trusting God’s plan, we can be the voices of change in our communities, workplaces, and families.
